When I first looked into getting a miniature dachshund, one of the first random questions that popped into my head was: how many puppies can those tiny dogs even carry? They look so small, almost like they’d struggle with more than one or two. Turns out, their bodies are a little more capable than they let on.
The Average Litter Size
Most miniature dachshunds will have about 4–6 puppies in a litter. That’s the middle ground. But the number isn’t set in stone it can swing lower or higher depending on the dog.
- The smallest litters can be just 1 or 2 puppies.
- The largest reported litters for minis can go up to 8 or even 9 puppies.
Full-size (standard) dachshunds often have a bit more around 6 on average since their bodies are bigger and can carry more comfortably.
What Affects the Number of Puppies?
A few things play into how many little sausages show up when it’s time:
- The mom’s age – Younger dachshunds, especially in their first pregnancy, usually have fewer puppies.
- Health and genetics – Strong, healthy dogs from larger litters themselves sometimes pass that on.
- Size of the mom – Even within “miniature,” some are smaller than others. Smaller frame often means fewer pups.
So if you’re thinking of breeding, know that your dog’s body has a natural limit—and it’s not something you can (or should) try to push.
Why It Matters
Knowing the average litter size helps you prepare. More puppies means more space, more food, and a lot more chaos in those first weeks. One or two puppies? That’s easier to handle, but sometimes singletons need extra socialization since they don’t have siblings to learn from.
The Sweet Spot
For miniature dachshunds, 4 to 6 puppies seems to be the sweet spot nature usually goes for. Enough to keep things lively, not so many that mom is overwhelmed.
So the next time someone asks you, “How many puppies can a miniature dachshund have?” you can tell them: usually a small handful, sometimes just one or two, sometimes a whole little pack. Either way, it’s always a surprise and that’s part of the fun.
